How Did Knut Go From Super-Star Polar Bear to "Psycho-Bear"?

Imagine: You have been rescued as a newborn from a mother who rejected you and would likely have killed you. You have been in an incubator for 44 days then cared for 24 hours a day for months by someone who shows he loves you unconditionally. This individual is always there to feed and bathe you, to snuggle and play with you. You believe you can always rely upon him for meeting all your needs.

The public scrambles to see you because you are an adorable miracle. Important others and the media, on the other hand, view you as a cash cow. This human adulation, where you are the center of constant “ooh-ing” and “ah-ing” and applause, goes on for a nearly two years. You delight in it and come to feel it is your life, your entitlement. Then suddenly things change.

Because you are growing older, you are no longer as cute and cuddly to the public. They become somewhat less enamoured and attentive to you and the media has gone on to cover other things. You wonder where all the celebrity you have had and have been taught to expect has gone. Something is very wrong. Where is your surrogate dad when you need him? You feel there is a gaping hole in your heart, a gnawing aching emptiness that you need to fill but do not know how.

You long for your dad with whom you identify. You crave his undying love and attention. But the powers-that-be have dictated that he is no longer allowed to be with you where you live because of your increasing age. You have been permanently separated from your dad… and your heart. Your life is falling apart and you just do not understand what is going on.

You are lonely. You continue to look for the crowds and all their life-affirming applause. When no one is around, you cry and whimper. You cuddle with something that has the scent of your dad. It allows you to recall the glow of the warming, fun times. But then the lonely reality re-emerges and you cry plaintively. Because you are so confused and frustrated, you get angry and howl with rage. You also begin to act in seemingly “strange,” repetitive ways, like head bobbing, circling, and pacing the perimeter of your small living space.

Inconceivably, you are reunited for a short time with your rejecting mother who takes this opportunity to attack you. She and her two female companions carry out a campaign of “terror,” attacking and chasing you. You are only a youngster and do not understand why you are now the victim of such overwhelming pain and grief. Everything seems to be spiraling downward. Cut off from all your previous sources of love and attention, you wonder what you could have done to deserve all this.

You seem to be losing your grip on who you are supposed to be. But who is that really? More to the point, what is that? You do not know. The lines have been so blurred they are indistinguishable. You know only how you feel, which is terrible. And you want others to know it too… and bring back the love and attention.

Knut, the polar bear who was born on December 5, 2007, at the Berlin Zoo-the first to be born and survive there in 30 years-was an incredible marketing opportunity for the zoo. At the peak of his super-stardom he even graced the cover on Vanity Fair with Leonardo DiCaprio. But just a few years later he was almost a has-been: no longer white, fluffy, and adorably baby-like in all his playful antics. His dad, keeper and trainer Thomas Doerflein had died suddenly. In addition, the press had begun label him a “narcissist,” “psycho-bear,” and “publicity-addicted” because of his increasingly aggressive and idiosyncratic behavior. No keepers came near him now because he was seen as unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Seduced and abandoned by the age of four years old, he was still a child who would not achieve polar bear maturity until 10 or 11 years, potentially living 15-to-20 years in his “love-deprived” captivity. He had become an incredibly lonely outcast – neither polar bear nor human – because he was starving for his long-lost sense of belonging and being cared for.

On Saturday, March 19, 2011, before a crowd of 660 to whom he could no longer relate as he had in the past, he did his repetitive circling then had what appeared to be a seizure. He staggered along the rocks then fell backwards into the water of his moat… and drowned. While one can question the keeping of polar bears in captivity since these animals are designed to live in about 12,500 square miles of Arctic ice floe, the more important question is since we are going to keep them in captivity, how can we raise them so they know they are polar bears, not humans? How do we make sure they do not learn that their acceptance and worth come from human interaction? Knut’s short, sad life is a telling example of what can happen when we do not teach a polar bear it is its own species first, a bear.

Law, Order and Sports

World class athlete. College star. Professional athlete. It is not only a state of being, but it is most definitely a state of mind. What brings me to think about this is the conviction and sentencing of O.J. Simpson for kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other charges. This verdict came exactly 13 years to the day from when OJ was acquitted for the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in what many saw as a travesty of justice, while others saw it as a huge civil rights win.

The current verdict also seems to come at a time when we may be ushering in a new age of reality for athletes who, for as far back as I can remember, have been treated with deference and a wink and a nod by the justice system. All because they can throw, catch, run or hit better than you or I can. This treatment has tended to transcend any racial, ethnic or religious boundaries and been based on athletic ability and or star power. We have historically seen the same type of treatment come out of Hollywood, where repetitive drunk driving and narcotics possession for the stars from television and the movies seem to get treated with a slap on the wrist and a few hours of community service.

Now there is no doubt that the OJ case has a life and history of its own, but we are reading more often the stories of crimes that in the past may have been swept under the rug, that are now being treated with a higher degree of seriousness and consequences for those involved.

Let’s say I get into a fight in a bar, get caught driving drunk, steal something from my neighbors house, get caught with a knife or a gun or maybe even kill someone. What is going to happen to me? Who will defend me? I am just a regular guy, so the chances are that I will be at the mercy of the legal system. No special treatment or deals. Just the best attorney that I can afford who will lead me through the system. No question I will most likely be treated more fairly than those who cannot afford counsel of their own choosing and must go with the legal aid attorney that is assigned to their case. But at the mercy of the system none the less.

This is not to say that there have not been high profile convictions and sentencing for serious crimes because there most certainly have been (List Of Professional Sports People Convicted Of A Crime), but it seems that for those who are considered to be special in the public eye (aka valuable from a monetary stand point), there will be many people willing to lobby for them.

What the O.J. verdict shows us is that this is a bad guy. He put together his legal dream team then that wiped the floor with a prosecution team in over its’ head and a judge basking in the lime light. Many in the world cheered the verdict as if it were a civil rights victory more than a legal one. In reality it was really not a civil rights victory, because O.J. was not, and is not really a civil rights spokesman. He is a man who has been coddled and taken care of by the system all of his life because of his skills as a running back at USC and later for the Buffalo Bills. Self centered, self absorbed and incredible arrogant.

This has typically been the way that things work in society. How many campus crimes have been swept under the rug in order to keep the “franchise” player or players on the field and the glory and revenues continuing to roll into the particular schools coffers.

We are now hopefully seeing a move towards accountability no matter who you are or what you do for a living. Even if you do that something exceptionally well and make a lot of money for a lot of people.

Hero’s Journey (Monomyth) : Gladiator, Star Wars, The Departed

Hollywood Star Articles | Posted by admin
Jun 20 2011

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188 stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

There is only one story.

The Hero’s Journey:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharsis).

d) Gives you a universal structural template upon which you can superimpose your situational story.

and more…

Convergence

Pre the Seizing of the Sword the Hero separates ideologically and physically, often from allies. Post the Seizing of the Sword (or the Rebirth through Death) those allies and that ideology converge again. This is where the Shape Shifter’s True Nature becomes most apparent.

a) In Gladiator (2000), Lucilla comes back to Maximus.

b) In Star Wars (1977), Han thinks about “leaving this party.”

c) In The Departed (2006), Dignam leaves.

3 Top Celebrity News Bits of 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

2010 like any other year has been chock full of celebrity happenings. Here’s a look at a few of the top celebrity news items from the year that is almost over:

Sandra Bullock leaves Jesse James: Just days after Sandra had won her Oscar for the movie “The Blindside” Sandra got a very heartbreaking blindside of her own. Sandra found out in the worst possible way that her husband of five years, Jesse James, had been cheating on her. To make matters worse, not only had he been cheating on her, but he had cheated on her with several different women. And to make matters worse than that, he had been bringing some of these “other women” around their mutual friends. The most heartbreaking aspect of it all, was that Sandra was the queen of the awards season, and she wholehearted credited her wonderful marriage as the reason why she was able to have the love and sensitivity that her characters needed to win her awards. She showed so much love and gratitude for her husband in a very public way, just to find out from a tabloid magazine that he had been living a secret life behind her back. Sandra immediately left Jesse, filed for divorce, and then revealed that she was taking sole custody of a baby that the two had been adopting in secret. So not only did the world learn that the marriage was over, but they found out about the baby at the same time!

John Travolta and Kelly Preston Have a Baby: After almost two years of living hell, John Travolta and Kelly Preston announced that they were expecting a baby boy! The news was especially exciting after the untimely death of their 16 year old son Jett. Jett had many physical issues and disorders, and died due to a head injury. On top of this loss, the Travoltas had to battle an extortion case, where people tried to extort their money. The incidents took a major toll on their well being, but they bounced back personally and in their careers with the help of family and friends. It was announced a few days ago that Kelly went into labor to deliver their new baby boy.

The Death of Gary Coleman: A generation was heartbroken when child star Gary Coleman died this year of a brain hemorrhage. Gary was well known and loved during the 1970s through the 1980s, first in commercials, and then on Diff’rent Strokes. He was one of the biggest and most powerful child stars of his time. Unfortunately, his success didn’t continue into his adulthood. He took on many odd jobs, because he claimed that he was broke, and that his parents had spent his money. At the time of his death, he hadn’t spoken to his parents in over 20 years because of a court case. Gary was reuniting with his estranged wife when he died. There was speculation of foul play, but his wife was cleared of wrongdoing.

Tama Superstar Hyperdrive

Super Star Articles | Posted by admin
Jun 11 2011

With all the recent trends for shallow toms, it is no wonder that Tama has released the Tama Superstar Hyperdrive drum kit. With high gloss finishes, hardware, and a birch sound, it promises to be a great rock kit. Here, we’ll see if that’s the case in a mini-review. Let’s get going!

So, What Do We Have Here?

The kit has been made with birch to increase the attack and punch, but Tama have used basswood on the inner and outer plys of the shells, probably to keep costs down. The hardware on the shells is functional and on this review set has come in all black. The counter hoops and lugs look stunning, and it’s good to see that they work well too.

The hardware pack with the kit is good quality and isn’t gonna let you down. It’s double braced, flexible enough, but isn’t going to win any awards for innovation. Still, it gets the job done just fine. Something that’s better than just fine is are the finishes. There are 5 gloss choices available, but the dark desert fade on this particular set is superb. It fades from black to natural wood and back showing off the wood grain…beautiful.

Sound

The killer question is…’How does the Tama Superstar Hyperdrive sound?’ Well, the birch lends power and punch, and the shallow toms make that sound even more prominent. They don’t sound too deep though, but they’re not supposed too! The bass drum takes care of that depth anyway by being a deep, beefy, monster! It’s got loads of power and needs a blanket or something put inside to calm it down slightly. But, once that’s done it’s penetrating, projecting, and loud.

Like many mid and beginner level drum sets, the snare drum is the weak link here. It’s a bit dead and boxey, but rim shots soon bring it to life. There is a reasonable pop and attack to it I guess, but nothing that’ll get you too excited.

Summary

If I had to sum up the Tama Superstar Hyperdrive is a couple of words they would be ‘attacking’ and ‘punchy’. The bass and toms will be right up your street is fast paced rock is your style (think travis barker). But, the snare drum lets it down. You can always replace it if you’re not happy, but some folks might even like it the way it is.

Nice finishes, hardware, and sound make it a good, but not amazing set.

Drug Addiction Rampant In Hollywood

Hollywood Star Articles | Posted by admin
Jun 10 2011

Lindsay, Britney, Paris, Nicole, Mischa-the list goes on and on. Are all of America’s young superstars addicted to drugs and alcohol?

“People in the entertainment business are introduced to illicit substances so early in life,” says Stephen Della Valle, author of the new book Rising Above the Influence and president of the board at Turning Point rehabilitation center. “Before they realize it, drinking and using drugs becomes a way of life. And if they’re not careful, they end up in one of three places: rehab, jail or a coffin.”

Hollywood is no stranger to substance abuse. But with today’s level of media scrutiny, thanks to paparazzi and the Internet, the subject is getting more attention than ever. These days, it’s commonplace to see even underage stars getting busted for DUI and spending a day or two in jail, or a week in a rehabilitation facility.

“It’s sad that many of them never get a chance to live a clean life,” says Mr. Della Valle. “Many stars are given access to drugs and alcohol at a young age, and it’s tough to break those habits once they’re started-especially when you work in an industry with so much pressure and so little real accountability.”

Young celebrities have long battled addictions in Tinseltown. Some of the more famous cases include:

· Drew Barrymore – started drinking at nine, used marijuana at ten and cocaine at twelve; was in rehab by thirteen

· Lindsay Lohan – entered the Cirque Lodge rehab just after turning twenty-one

· River Phoenix – died of a drug overdose outside a nightclub at the age of twenty-three

· Brad Renfro – battled a heroin addiction that recently cost him his life at the age of twenty-five

Mr. Della Valle is no stranger to this phenomenon either, having picked up his first drink at the age of twelve. He spent over twenty years as a drug addict and alcoholic before finally committing himself to a recovery program and turning his life around.

“Everyone has their ‘bottom,” he says, “their own point where they look at their life and think, Things just can’t get any worse. It’s sad that so many people in Hollywood hit that bottom so young.”

Stephen Della Valle is president of the board of directors at Turning Point rehabilitation center in Verona, New Jersey. Currently celebrating twenty years of sobriety, he lives in Oak Ridge, New Jersey, with his wife, Donna. He has three children.

How You Can Recruit Sales Super Stars – Part I – Recognising Sales Sheep And Wolves

Super Star Articles | Posted by admin
Jun 09 2011

Ted Nicholas, the author of “Magic Words That Sell” once said,

“Marketing mistakes are by far the primary reason businesses do not survive. This includes companies which consider themselves direct marketers as well as those who do not”.

Of course Ted is quite right make mistakes in marketing and you’ll end up paying through the nose with absolutely no results. Yet companies continually make mistakes in sales.

They waste the opportunities that marketing provides by using salespeople that have one, or more, of these traits:

Poor closers
Too aggressive
Passive order takers
Fear of phoning
Can’t write to persuade
Can’t present without being boring
Unable to build value in the service or product
Has poor follow-up skills
Can’t get to top decision makers
Finds rejection difficult to handle
Poor time manager
Doesn’t think strategically
Not self-disciplined
Doesn’t try to get market knowledge
Yet sales training may have little or no effect because they’re at the limit of their potential already. What About The Owners As Salestaff?Often the owners in small companies are also the sales staff. If they can’t sell they ultimately go out of business. If they can sell they usually reach a point where they’re working harder than if they were in a job. Think about it…

If the owner is the company’s sales channel they’re probably also their own bookkeeper, administrative clerk, VAT returns clerk, receptionist and general “muck in and get the thing finished or delivered” guy too.

We all know about Michael Gerber’s mantra about “Working on the business, rather than in it”. We all agree that’s a very laudable aim. But we’re all so busy doing, doing that we can’t quite bear to tear ourselves away from working in the business.

I’ve been a consultant for over 20 years and I’ve rarely met a business owner or director who’s felt able to step back and consider the strategic aims of the business as it grows.

It’s all down to the perceived urgent need for sales. Because often management have no visibility of sales beyond the next one or two months.

Ultimately your business reaches a point where you and your current staff are working all the hours there are to simply stand still.

Growing the organisation is just another item that stays on the “to do” list.

Before you reach that point you need to recruit a salesman. I’ll use the term salesman rather than salesperson to indicate a man or woman who sells because it’s seems less clumsy than salesperson.

It all comes down to recruiting the right salesman to take the company to the next level – and tied to good marketing too of course.

Broadly you can break salesmen into sales sheep, sales wolves and sales super stars. Let me explain what that means to you as the business owner.

Sales Sheep

They wait for customer to come to them, or the phone to ring to take an order. Or they wait in a shop and sell purely because the customer wants to buy something from anyone who wants to take their money. They think the customer is always right even if it means that they’ll lose money on an issue that the customer created themselves. Or they’ll give the customer some stock they had lying around. What about the salesman who drops by and entertains their contacts to “touch base”, “to see if there’s anything for me today” and who “nearly gets a sales but doesn’t quite?”

Sales sheep cost you money. Let’s count the ways:

Their basic pay to sales ratio is higher than your own, or other sales staff
They give stock or services away as sweeteners, or to get out of a problem
They entertain clients on expenses and still don’t get sales
They entertain people at the clients who are not remotely connected to the sale process
They don’t follow-up and lose sales to competitors who doHow do you recognise one? There is a way before you even recruit them…

Sales WolvesThey almost run out of your door and can’t wait to close a sale. They’re so keen they can make people buy your products and services even though they may be wrong for those customers. They know what you sell and try to sell it all to every customer, whether there’s a need for it or not. They’re equally upfront in-house anything that affects their sale, and often their commission, is bulldozed out of the way to make sure that sale gets done. Sometimes it’s pushed through to the detriment of other customers or sales people.

Sales wolves cost you money. Let’s see how:

They sell lots but you get a higher returns rate
You get more external complaints, affecting your reputation and therefore referrals
You get more internal complaints and lose staff or morale drops
You lose sales by them tying up staff that other sales people need
They don’t want to know about customer issues after a sale. They’re too busy on the next saleHow do you recognise one? There is a way before you recruit them…

Sales SuperstarsA good salesman gets in more business than he costs you to run and make your company more money than that. A bad salesman is a drain on your company. It can be almost impossible to sort the good from the bad. Almost, but not impossible.

When you recruit a salesman you need to aim for the star salesman. Don’t be put off because you think can’t afford them.

The star salesman psychological profile is formed during their early childhood and you may catch one before they realise they’re great. Or you may find one who was burnt out and is ready to join the fray again.

Either one doesn’t require vast amounts of money. Remember even if you paid them 5 times what you pay yourself and they brought in 20 times more in profit would their salary even matter?

According to psychological research a star salesman is driven by two factors: Ego and empathy. Too much ego and they get the sales but at a huge cost to you in terms of customer and internal relationships bruised or destroyed by the ego-driven salesman. Also known as a Sales Wolf.

Too much empathy and they end up discounting so deeply and being so completely on their customer’s side that you’ll lose money on deals that would normally be profitable. Also known as a Sales Sheep.

Now you know how to tell sales sheep from sales wolves you want to find out how to get sales superstars. Check the next article in this two part series.

The Walt Disney Company launched a premium channel called Disney Channel which entertains families with their magic. This channel specializes in television programming for children and has broadcasted many programs which were immediate hits.

One of its programs is the Disney channel national talent search where they are searching the next person to become the star of the channel. So, if you have a child between the ages of 10 to 17 years and who is interested in becoming a star then you can send an initial audition video, photos and resumes to their company either through e-mail or through regular mail. Contestants would perform acting, dancing and singing routines at the auditions. The show will choose some finalists from the rest of the crowd who did fairly well in the auditions and then these finalists will have to compete in a reality show which will be held by the Company. The winner in the reality show would receive a contract to star in a Disney Channel Television Show or in a Feature Film. Isn’t that great!

So, find out more about the Disney channel national talent search on its website and let your child be the lucky one to act on television. As your child is below the age of 18, he would need a signed consent by parents or guardians, and you would have to accompany your child throughout the production.
